Chen Qiufan (陈楸帆), also known as Stanley Chan, is a prominent Chinese speculative fiction writer, translator, and creative producer. Born in 1981 in Shantou, Guangdong, he graduated from Peking University with degrees in Chinese literature and film arts. He began his writing career in 1997 and has published over 60 stories and five books. His notable works include The Waste Tide (2013), an eco-cyberpunk novel inspired by his experiences near Guiyu, the world’s largest e-waste recycling center, and AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future (2021), co-authored with AI expert Kai-Fu Lee.  
Chen’s writing style, often described as “science fiction realism,” focuses on the internal struggles of individuals during times of accelerated change.  His short fiction has garnered multiple awards, including three Galaxy Awards and twelve Nebula Awards for Science Fiction and Fantasy in Chinese. His stories have been featured in publications such as Fantasy & Science Fiction, MIT Technology Review, and Clarkesworld Magazine. 
Beyond writing, Chen has worked for tech companies like Baidu and Google China. He is the founder of Thema Mundi, a creative studio based in Shanghai, and serves as the Honorary President of the Chinese Science Fiction Writers Association. In 2022, he was appointed as SCI-Arc’s Futurist-in-Residence, engaging in interdisciplinary research on speculative futures.
