Biography

Artem R. Oganov (born March 3, 1975, Moscow) is a Russian theoretical crystallographer, materials scientist, and Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He graduated with honors from the Faculty of Geology at Moscow State University (1997), earned his PhD from University College London (2002) and a Dr. Habil. degree from ETH Zurich (2007). He is a Distinguished Professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, where he heads the Materials Discovery Laboratory. Previously, he was a professor at Stony Brook University (2008–2015). He created the evolutionary crystal structure prediction method USPEX, now used by thousands of researchers worldwide. He is a member of the European Academy, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the American Physical Society. An author of over 300 scientific papers, laureate of the Georgy Gamow Award, and recipient of a Russian government megagrant, he ranks among the world’s most highly cited scientists. Since April 2026, he has been the Chief Scientific Officer of SberUniversity.
